A manual blood pressure cuff?
Gauging a manual blood pressure cuff involves the following
steps:
Locate the brachial artery: The first step is to locate the
brachial artery in the patient's arm. This artery is located in the crease of
the elbow, and you can find it by palpating the area with your fingers.
Prepare the cuff: Once you've located the brachial artery,
prepare the cuff by wrapping it around the upper arm with the cuff's lower edge
about 2.5cm above the elbow crease.
Inflate the cuff: Next, inflate the cuff by squeezing the
rubber bulb attached to the cuff until you can no longer hear or feel the pulse
in the brachial artery.
Slowly release the pressure: Slowly release the pressure
from the cuff by turning the valve counterclockwise. Watch the gauge as the
pressure drops and listen for the first sound (systolic) and the last sound
(diastolic) to determine the patient's blood pressure.
Record the reading: Record the systolic and diastolic
pressures on a chart or in the patient's medical record.
